The Way Towards Zero Energy Homes: Energy-Efficient Building Technologies

This program will provide an overview of the design principles of energy-efficient buildings, especially in “Passive House Technology.” The lecture supplements individual basic knowledge about energy-efficient building design, passive solar concepts, solutions for new homes and remodeling up to realization and construction and prefabrication processes. Principles for the design and construction process as well as detailed solutions for improved building enclosures, high-efficient window systems and state-of-the-art ventilation systems with heat recovery to decrease ventilation heat losses will be presented and examples of Austrian architecture will be shown. 1-3 pm. $15. Walking Tour: NYU and Superblocks

This tour examines the architecture of the Robert Moses-era superblocks south of Washington Square and also identifies proposed sites included in NYU’s evolving 2031 campus plan. With Houston Street as a physical and ideological divide, the tour continues south to explore new construction in the protected SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District,Washington Square Village, I.M. Pei’s Silver Towers, Aldo Rossi’s Scholastic Building and Jean Nouvel’s 40 Mercer St., as well as the Little Singer Building and the Haughwout Building, are included. 10:30 am. $20.
